3 Reasons Your Dishwasher Is Leaking & How to Fix It

There are a few reasons why your dishwasher is leaking. Whatever the cause, before attempting a repair, it’s important that the source of the leak be identified to avoid causing greater damage to the appliance or the surrounding area. Shadrach Plumbing & Cooling has trained plumbers with the expertise needed to solve your leaking dishwasher challenge.

Common Causes of a Leaking Dishwasher

One cause of dishwasher leaks is a damaged or worn-out door gasket. The gasket creates a watertight seal between the dishwasher door and the tub. Over time, the gasket may become loose or develop cracks, allowing water to leak out. To fix this issue, the gasket likely needs to be replaced with a gasket specifically designed for your dishwasher model.

More common causes of dishwasher leaks are:

  • A clogged or damaged drain hose – The drain hose carries the water out of the dishwasher and into the plumbing system. If the hose becomes clogged with food particles or other debris, water may back up and leak out. To fix this issue, the drain hose will need to be cleaned out or replaced. Another possibility could be a damaged or ill-positioned hose clamp. Call Shadrach for an efficient plumbing repair to get your dishwasher operating again.
  • A faulty inlet valve – How water flows into the dishwasher is regulated by the inlet valve, which is located at the bottom of the appliance. An improperly placed inlet valve or one that’s clogged or damaged, may cause leaks. Call Shadrach Plumbing & Cooling to repair or replace the valve.
  • A clogged or improperly positioned drain pipe – If the drain pipe is clogged or not in the right position relative to the sink drain level, water may leak from the dishwasher. It’s best to have a professional from Shadrach inspect the problem and provide a dishwasher repair to fix the issue.
  • A malfunctioning pump – Sometimes the seal around the pump or a pump that stops working altogether can cause water to leak from the dishwasher. The pump is responsible for circulating water through the dishwasher during the wash cycle. If the pump becomes damaged or worn out, water may leak out of the appliance. To fix this issue, the pump and connections may need to be repaired or replaced with a new one.
